Jue 2020 – August 2020
8-week program of 1-hour weekly sessions from mid-June to mid-August. It equips teachers with physics and math content and methodology, knowledge, and a connection to other science disciplines, all prior to the beginning of the new academic year. The classes are a combination of lectures and hands-on sessions. Teachers gain 21st-century skills in compliance with all academic standards (including NGSS, states’ standards, common core) and beyond.
Week 1: Introduction to System International units for length, mass, temperature, and time.
Density, experimental methods of finding density for bodies of various shapes: rectangular prism, cylinder, sphere, density of objects of a random shape, density of fluids, and density of grains.
Week 2: Mechanical Motion
Motion along a straight line, speed, velocity, acceleration, equations, and graphs.
Week 3: Circular motion
Connection between angular and linear velocities. Gears.
Week 4: Oscillations and pendulum.
Week 5: Forces
Gravitational force and how it’s different from weight. Friction force, elastic force and Hook’s Law. Archimedes’ buoyancy force.
Week 6: Momentum
Law of conservation of momentum, energy and units of energy, potential energy due to gravity, elastic potential energy, kinetic energy, law of conservation of energy, and the connection between energy and work.
Week 7: Newton’s Laws
equations associated with them, examples where Newton’s Laws reveal themselves in real life.
Week 8: Simple machines
Levers, blocks, incline, and the variations.
